Why Internet is Required?

Internet is required for the locking system, and snow melt system. In addition, the intercom to phone system uses SIP capabilities to connect the proposed visitor with you. In locations with elevators, the call box will also need an internet connection. This means Internet is just required, and necessary for things to work. A cellular phone will not work in this need, and you would need a service from an ISP (Internet Service Provider).

In the case of apartments, internet is included. This is not necessary, but since Internet is required for the above systems, it makes sense to be able to charge a little more, and allow you to share the internet service that is necessary for the apartment building. With this in mind, you do not have a communications closet. If you would need to install a rack mount server, then you would need to contact management to have that server installed. You would have access to a 15U with some of the racks already in use. This includes 1U for the patch panel, 1U for the network switch, and 1U for the network server. This gives you up to 12U for adding storage servers, or media servers. Since I target Section-8 tenants, it is unlikely that you would have any of these servers. Each apartment takes up one floor (with exception of SROs), there will be an LAN IP Address of 192.168.floor.xxx. Therefore, the second floor apartment is 192.168.2.xxx. This will allow you to access your LAN, and prevent your neighbors from accidentally accessing your network printer, or computers. During the application process, you would provide your SSID, passphrase, and network server password. The passphrase is to allow all wifi devices to connect to the wifi network. You would also decide if you wish to add a guest network. The guest network will just provide for internet connection, and no access to the main LAN. Your guest network will have -g appended to the LAN’s network. If your Wifi network is fsp, then your guest network will be fsp-g.

In the case of houses, there will be a communications closet. This closet like the apartments will offer a 15U rack mount server. The exception is the house does not have a network server, and instead – the tenant will be required to provide their own network server, or router. You are required by the lease to have an internet connection. This is because of the resources noted above. I do not need to know your credentials as if I or my employee comes to your residence, they will use their own network resources if they should need to connect to the internet. If you are receiving Section-8, you should be able to qualify for Xfinity’s Internet Essentials program. You would be required to use their router, but service is 75MBPS down for $15/month.
