Sidewalk

The sidewalk might not seem too important to devote a page to it, but it will warrant a paragraph or two for the purpose of modernizing the home. First, the address will be stamped on the sidewalk of the building. This is to allow someone to find the address as quickly as possible.

Even more importantly will be the ground temperature during the winter months will be set to 54°F (12°C) for in-ground radiant heating. The idea is simple. The snow and ice will melt, and the sidewalk will be dry. This will reduce the workload required by the person that would shovel. Each building will have a shovel and a bag of rock salt in case the system fails, but this should be an exception rather than the rule. The reason for 54°F is because this is the ground temperature. The system will take the warmer liquid in a pipe in the ground, and flow it to the sidewalk’s lines which will heat the sidewalk to 54°F. Since water freezes at 32°F (0°C), then the higher temperature will melt the snow and ice.

For apartment buildings, the realty company is responsible for making sure the sidewalks are clear. If the system fails to work properly, then someone has to go to the building, and shovel and salt the sidewalk. For houses, you will be responsible for clearing the sidewalks of snow and ice. Since you will also have in-ground radiant heating, you should also benefit from the system in place. Still, you should consider a snow shovel, and rock salt as a backup in case something fails.
